PCT Trail Angels Groups – Connection and Collaboration

The goal of Trail Angels is to assist hikers, arguably this can be done best by working together, not at odds with each other. Without hikers there would be no Trail Angels. One of the goals of Trail Angel Central is to promote connection and collaboration of Trail Angels amongst themselves.

This can happen in multiple ways. Trail Angels connecting and collaborating internally in their own local area’s community groups (Facebook Groups or otherwise). This can give flexibility to the Trail Angels summer schedules yet leaving a system for hikers in place to be supported without frustration and interruption. Different Angels working together can do more using less resources.

Secondly, multiple Trail Angel groups can be loosely connected with groups adjacent to them on the trail. This allows connection and collaboration amongst each other over a wider spread of the trail. Counties and cities in many parts of the country already have a method of mutual assistance that allows for a quickly coordinated efforts to assist each other when additional help and resources are needed that they are not capable of sourcing solely by themselves.

Each year the trail season experiences missing or injured hikers, weather or fire events, trail closures, that can require assistance from multiple Trail Angel Groups.

One extremely significant way Trail Angel Groups can be useful is during special events. For example, in July 2024, this exact scenario of multiple Trail Angel Groups coordination was deployed during the explosive Northern California CAMP fire event and immediate 90-mile PCT trail closure. Not only did Trail Angels need to get several hundred hikers out of the immediate 90-mile fire zone trail closure. Additional hikers needed to be relocated outside of the trail closure and had to be moved another 100 miles further north to far Northern California to get out of very dangerous smoke conditions in order to hike safely.

Efforts can coordinate more quickly and effectively if the Trail Angels groups have taken the time and effort to be aware of each other and know how to quickly communicate with other nearby groups.

To facilitate this better awareness, and connection of Trail Angel Groups TAC is encouraging that PCT Facebook (or other) Trail Angel Groups have a representative attend the Trail Angel Conference in late May 2026

That person will be able to network with many other PCT Trail Angels and meet first hand their counterpart in their adjacent region’s Trail Angel Groups. One of the planned objectives of the conference is to create a comprehensive list of PCT Trail Angels groups, direct leaders contact information (email and/or phone) that can be used by any of the leaders on the list to solicit and coordinate help and resources. As a bonus, hopefully that representative will also come back to their groups with some new information to share how other Trail Angel Groups are finding and connecting with hikers with added success!

The 2026 PCT season already seems to be setting up to be a potentially significant fire danger year with a low snow load, warmer than normal temperatures. In fact, there are already many fires currently burning across the nation.

Attending this year’s conference will offer space for building collaborative connections with other Trail Angels groups that may be extra beneficial this year. Once these connections and support networks are created, they will be in place and ready for quick and responsive action by multiple groups.

Pre-registration for the May 29-31 conference event is now available on the TrailAngelCentral.org website. The event will be held in the Trail Town of Pinecrest, California, around mile 1018 on the PCT. Carpools will be organized closer to the event to aid in sharing of travel costs to attend the event.
